DEMMEL COFFEE
“Delight from Liechtenstein”—three words that mean more than just a product name. They encapsulate the philosophy of Peter Demmel, the man behind DEMMEL KAFFEE.
March 3, 2025 - Enjoyment is at the heart of our product—a coffee that leaves you wanting more and captures that moment of indulgence. And “Liechtenstein”? This small but exquisite country is more than just our home. It is synonymous with quality, tranquility, and a way of life that celebrates enjoyment.
I am proud that these three words appear on my coffee packages: “Delight from Liechtenstein.” It is both an honor and a responsibility. As a brand partner of Liechtenstein Marketing, I am honored to represent the brand not only here and in neighboring countries, but now also worldwide.
The Path of Pleasure
The journey to truly great coffee is a long one, marked by many decisions. In the past, I used to travel regularly to coffee-producing countries to taste the best beans in person. Today, I work with outstanding agents, whether in Switzerland, Germany, or directly on-site in the producing countries.
The beans we use come from eight countries: Brazil, India, Indonesia, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, and El Salvador. The majority of our beans come from Brazil, particularly from the Cerrado region and the Chapada Diamantina mountain range—where ideal altitudes of up to 1,400 meters and mountainous terrain with a mild climate provide perfect conditions for the beans.
Selection and Refinement – The Secret of Flavor
The selection of beans is crucial, but the true art lies in the processing. Our beans are stored in a warehouse in Buchs, where between 60 and 80 tons are kept. From there, we retrieve 4.8 tons at a time and transport them to Schaan. Here, the coffee is prepared in our “green bean warehouse” and then sent to the “roasting oven.” The “roaster” is a true master of roasting technology. The technology I work with is now 16 years old and was developed by me. It is the Flowroast process©, an innovative roasting method that allows the coffee to be refined in a particularly gentle, delicate, and aromatic way.
The process works as follows: We place the coffee beans in the drum, which is placed under negative pressure—essentially a vacuum. In this uniform negative-pressure process, the coffee releases many of its bitter and tannin-containing substances as early as the first stage of processing. This process ensures a particularly mild and balanced roast. The beans rotate continuously in the drum, and when they reach the top, the rotational motion causes them to fall back down. At precisely this moment, hot air is drawn toward the beans by the negative pressure, refining the roasting in a way that makes the coffee exceptionally aromatic.
This process ensures that the coffee’s full range of aromas comes into its own and that the desired flavor characteristics develop to their fullest potential. This is how the unique DEMMEL COFFEE is created. After processing, the beans cool down, are filtered, and packaged. To allow the carbon dioxide gases produced during the aging process to escape, each package is equipped with a valve—an important technical detail.
Harmony of Flavors – Like Music in Coffee
DEMMEL Verona is the brand name for a harmonious blend of flavors. After all, harmony has a lot to do with music. The DEMMEL Verona blend combines three different beans from India, Indonesia, and Brazil. Each of these beans brings its own unique character—distinct in flavor, soil, climate, and origin.
I combine these three distinct characteristics into a single blend—much like how, in music, three different notes are combined to form a harmonious major chord. This creates a harmony of flavors where the right blend is key. Just like in music: a wrong note disrupts the overall picture and sounds unpleasant. It’s the same with coffee beans—only the perfect blend unleashes the full flavor potential and ensures a delightful cup of coffee.
With DEMMEL Verona, you can brew both a long-lasting, aromatic coffee and a strong espresso. This simplifies logistics, as DEMMEL Verona is by far the most popular blend, even though we offer a total of five different ones.
The Right Way to Prepare It – A Moment of Pure Enjoyment
Enjoying a good cup of coffee starts not only with the bean, but also with the brewing process. There are countless ways to brew coffee. Each of these methods brings out different nuances of the coffee, from the texture to the crema, which contains many aromatic compounds. A little tip: Stir your coffee before drinking it to experience the aromas even more intensely! Even if we don’t add anything else to our coffee—the crema should always be well distributed to enjoy the full, homogeneous flavor experience.
Our coffee blends – a variety to suit every taste
DEMMEL KAFFEE offers five different blends, each with its own story and perfect for a variety of tastes:
Vienna – A medium, full-bodied roast with a smooth flavor and subtle acidity. This pure Arabica blend combines the finest Central and South American highland beans with a hint of African coffee.
Palermo – Full-bodied and spicy, perfect for a classic espresso. The aroma is intense, and the finish is long-lasting with a subtle, slightly bitter note.
Verona – A well-rounded all-rounder that is also served in top-tier restaurants. Verona is the most popular coffee and is appreciated both as an espresso and for regular coffee enjoyment.
Santiago – A blend of certified organic beans. This coffee combines the spirit of Compostela with the pleasure of savoring every moment—perfect for quiet moments when you take time for yourself.
Intero – A fruity, bold coffee with a sweet, nutty finish. It’s a modern coffee that excels even in sophisticated preparations.
Peter Demmel, Philosopher of Pleasure
A quote by Arthur Schopenhauer guides me in my work: “The nobler the work, the greater the pleasure.” I find this quote fitting because it reflects how I understand pleasure in my life and at DEMMEL KAFFEE. For 17 years now, everything has revolved around enjoyment—the fresh air, the tranquility, good food, and the pleasant, intelligent people who surround me. For me, that is the essence of enjoyment in Liechtenstein and what makes this region so special.
My name is on every package of DEMMEL KAFFEE. To me, it’s more than just a brand name—it’s like a signature that I stand behind. It embodies tradition and highlights the craftsmanship behind the product. The name DEMMEL KAFFEE isn’t just melodious; it’s also my family name. Every package bearing this name symbolizes the quality and value of the product. Because when I visit my customers, it’s not just anyone coming—it’s Peter Demmel from DEMMEL KAFFEE.
The Origin of the Idea – How It All Began
It was during my Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Entrepreneurship program that I discovered the world of coffee. My brother, who was working as a coffee roaster at the time, inspired me, and my thesis gave rise to the business idea for DEMMEL Kaffee. Today, 17 years later, I look back on a successful journey marked by quality, consistency, and a deep passion for coffee. I founded Demmel Kaffee with the goal of offering the best coffee from Liechtenstein—and that’s exactly what we do!
Packaging – Quality Down to the Last Detail
Our packaging is another standout feature. It is manufactured by Wipf, a Swiss company, and ensures that the coffee is optimally protected from oxygen and other external factors. Each package contains a valve that allows the gases produced by the freshly roasted coffee to escape. This ensures that the coffee stays fresh until it finally ends up in your cup.
I also work closely with the Special Education Center of the Principality of Liechtenstein, which has taken over our entire packaging logistics. The labels for our packages are carefully applied by the staff at the Special Education Center—a win-win situation that is very valuable to both us and our partners.
Home in Liechtenstein – Where Enjoyment Is at Home
I am a Liechtenstein citizen with Bavarian roots. I came to the Rhine Valley 23 years ago—in search of paradise! I sensed early on that I was living in a region of doers. For me, things have to be in motion; progress has to be made for me to be satisfied. And that is exactly what I found here in the Rhine Valley—from Lake Constance to the Bündner Herrschaft, along the Rhine. It’s a perfect location, with Vorarlberg and Eastern Switzerland as neighbors. This region offers not only a high quality of life but also excellent schools and world-renowned industries. This entrepreneurial spirit gives me strength and a drive for innovation, and I knew: This is where I want to make my home.
I’ve been living in Liechtenstein for 13 years—this is where I feel at home. Life here is of a remarkable quality. Our high level of productivity contributes greatly to that. Through my many trips to the countries where coffee originates, I’ve come to realize time and again just how reliable the sense of security is that we take for granted here. In many of those countries, that is by no means the case.
There’s no better place in the world than Liechtenstein. And that brings us full circle: I’m convinced of these three words—Enjoyment from Liechtenstein.
