Ice Cream Bliss in the Seventh Summer: The Ice Cream Bar in Schaan
What once began as a hobby in the home kitchen has now become a popular ice cream spot: At the ice cream bar in Schaan, they create flavors ranging from classic vanilla to the delicious blue Smurf ice cream—made especially for children. Homemade fruit sauces, low sugar content, fresh Alpine milk, and a constant stream of new ideas—here, ice cream is made with passion.
Whether you’re relaxing together at the ice cream bar or grabbing a quick treat from the self-service counter: once you’ve been here, you’ll be back. And sometimes even the dogs—because we have ice cream just for them, too.
Since 2024, the ice cream bar has been a proud partner of the Liechtenstein brand and proudly bears the “Genuss aus Liechtenstein” seal of quality—and you can taste it in every spoonful.
From a hobby to a success story
“My husband has always been fascinated by making ice cream from scratch,” Selina says, recalling their early attempts. After their business at the time closed at the end of 2017, she and her husband began experimenting a bit at home. Their small kitchen was often filled with the scent of vanilla, fresh strawberries, or roasted nuts. Selina stirred, tasted, and took notes—sometimes the ice cream turned out perfectly, sometimes it didn’t. But it was precisely this curiosity that led to success. “At first it was just for us, then the neighbors tried it, and eventually more and more people were lining up in front of our ice cream truck.”
The influx became so great that the residential neighborhood could no longer cope. A stroke of luck came just in time: their son Marcel helped them secure a space at the Alten Riet in Schaan. “That’s how our hobby turned into a serious endeavor—and now we’re already in our seventh summer.”
Ice cream is always a good choice
Then the pandemic sparked a new idea: self-service. “From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the summer and until 7 p.m. in the winter, people can grab their favorite ice cream—and it’s working out great,” Selina says proudly. She laughs and adds, “Let’s be honest: ice cream is always a hit—even when it’s snowing outside!”
In the summer, the area in front of the ice cream shop, complete with tables and seating, invites you to enjoy a leisurely treat. On weekends, fresh ice cream is available straight from the production line: Fridays and Saturdays from 4 to 8 p.m., and Sundays starting at noon.
From vanilla to stracciatella, from strawberry to mango
“The list of flavors is impressive—and sometimes a little crazy. Classics like vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate are still at the top of the list, but we love to experiment. Passion fruit sorbet, grapefruit ice cream, or chestnut ice cream in the fall are just a few examples.”
Carina, who originally intended to just “help out for a short while” after finishing her training, has since become the heart of the production process: “I’ve got the recipes memorized by now. It’s a demanding job—precision is key; every gram counts. On summer days, we make up to 400 servings, but sometimes as many as 700.”
Adolf, Selina’s husband, places the utmost importance on quality: homemade fruit sauces, as little sugar as possible, regional ingredients—from Liechtenstein whenever possible. “Customers can tell it’s homemade and really appreciate it,” says Selina.
Even dogs have long been regulars. There’s special sugar-free dog ice cream for them, and many four-legged friends already know their way to the ice cream stand all on their own. On hot days, they cool off by licking their tongues across their palates—a sight that always brings a smile to your face.
Two women, lots of ideas—and a little family support
The ice cream shop is a true family project: Mother Selina and daughter Carina are the heart of this small business. On busy days, the rest of the family pitches in too—because there’s plenty to do during the season.
“We have an excellent supplier of raw materials who is very responsive to our needs,” they explain. “This allows us to keep up with trends while also responding to our customers’ preferences.”
And our customers are by no means limited to Schaan: Many guests travel here from Switzerland or Austria, and we now also count numerous businesses among our clients—including grocery stores, healthcare and nursing facilities, and various cafés; even the local swimming pool relies on ice cream from Schaan.
Our ice cream is also a popular treat during work breaks or at company and family gatherings. We set up small freezers with space for about 80 servings—of course, smaller quantities are also available. And depending on your needs, we’ll come by with our refill service.
Vegans and people with lactose intolerance don’t have to miss out either: in addition to varieties made with coconut and almond milk, we’ve also been offering creamy Light and Zero ice cream since last year. This way, everyone can enjoy a moment of indulgence—and that’s exactly what brings us joy.»
Happiness by the spoonful
The ice cream bar has long since become more than just an insider's tip. Teenagers meet here after school, families enjoy their ice cream at home or in their own backyard, and even in winter, many simply grab their serving from the self-service counter.
“We definitely have another ten new varieties in mind,” Selina reveals. Carina adds with a laugh, “Sometimes I have to rein my parents in, otherwise our product line would get out of hand.”
Since 2024, the ice cream bar has been a proud partner of the Liechtenstein brand and bears the “Genuss aus Liechtenstein” seal of quality. For Selina and Carina, this is a wonderful achievement—and at the same time an incentive to keep trying out new ideas.
And when the two of them put the last containers of fresh ice cream in the freezer at the end of the day and everything is ready for the next day, all that’s left to say is:
“You can scoop up happiness—and it tastes like ice cream.”
