Cycling without borders: EuroVelo 15 now runs through Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is now part of the renowned European EuroVelo cycling route network: The international EuroVelo 15 cycling route, the Rhine Cycle Route, now runs for 26.4 km through the Principality, officially connecting it to the European cycling route network for the first time.

July 9, 2025 - EuroVelo 15, the Rhine Cycle Route, is one of Europe’s most popular cycling routes. The route begins in Andermatt in the canton of Uri and follows the Rhine from its source to the North Sea in Rotterdam. It passes through Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. As of this spring, the route now also passes through two additional countries: Liechtenstein and Austria.

A milestone in cross-border cooperation

With a route of approximately 62 km along the Rhine through Liechtenstein and Vorarlberg, the existing cycling network is being expanded to include an attractive and environmentally friendly option. The project was carried out in close cooperation with the State of Vorarlberg, Vorarlberg Tourism, SwitzerlandMobility, the Canton of St. Gallen, and Liechtenstein Marketing. “By connecting to the EuroVelo network, we are clearly positioning Liechtenstein as a hub for modern and sustainable mobility concepts. This project demonstrates successful collaboration and how cross-border cooperation can achieve shared mobility goals,” said State Councilor and Minister of Transportation Daniel Oehry at the grand opening, which took place today at Lake Egelsee in Mauren.

Initiatives for Sustainable Tourism

“EuroVelo 15 brings new visitors, visibility, and momentum for sustainable, high-quality tourism,” emphasizes Ulrike Charles, Head of Tourism at Liechtenstein Marketing. “Integration into the EuroVelo network not only promotes cycling tourism but also strengthens the regional economy.” Local restaurants, lodging providers, and cultural attractions benefit from increased visitor traffic and the growing demand for sustainable forms of travel.

The route has already been fully developed and is now equipped with standardized EuroVelo signage. The extension of the route takes cyclists through a unique mountain landscape and past cultural landmarks. As a result, the extension of the Rhine Cycle Route provides continuous wayfinding from Balzers to Lake Constance, and onward along the Rhine to the North Sea.
